At long last, my book is out there in the world. It’s been incredibly gratifying to see photos of the book at bookstores and in people’s hands. After working on a project for so many years, it’s surreal for it to finally be here.
It’s been a busy couple of weeks in the lead-up to publication day! Here’s the latest:
I published a piece in TIME about how the fights over George Washington and slavery offer lessons for the 250th anniversary.
I did a Q&A with Mother Jones about the book and its relevance.
I went on the Realms of Memory podcast to talk about Washington, slavery, and the politics of historical memory.
The first review of my book ran in Progressive Magazine: “Marks…has delivered a book of compassion, courage, and meticulous detail.”
I was at the Cambridge Public Library to talk about the book on March 30. You can view my talk here. This was my first time seeing a big pile of copies of my book!
There’s more to come in the weeks ahead, so I’ll keep you posted. If you haven’t already, I hope you’ll consider picking up a copy of the book this weekend.
And a quick note for anyone who pre-ordered from Amazon: they picked up the books from the publisher, but they seem to be delayed in some kind of Amazon purgatory at the moment. I hope they’ll ship soon!
Upcoming Events
I’ve got a few book talks coming up in April. I hope to see you at one of them!
April 14: Tudor Place (Washington, DC)
April 18: Woodlawn and Pope-Leighey House (Alexandria, VA)
April 28: Schnackenberg Lecture, Pacific Lutheran University (Tacoma, WA)
April 30: Keynote, Marie C. Malaro Symposium, George Washington University (Washington, DC)
There’s still more George Washington news breaking every day somehow, so I plan to be back soon with more. Thanks for reading.
